Forgotton photo #4

The breakfast of runner-ups. It's old rice mixed with curiously soft peanuts. Wrapped in an oh-so-sanitary plastic sleave and comes with a liberal packet of sugar and finely shredded coconut. After the drudgery of eating, you can amuse yourself with the day's piece-of-paper. This could be children's songs, news, homework, or even private customs declarations forms. Wouldn't be surprised to find a copy of my own passport one day.

How to drive in Saigon

I'm getting pretty good with on the scooter. Problem is when I let Jenny take the wheel. Here we are riding on the wrong side of the road and then we crash and die.

I don't like the backpacker district. So many fat, pale white folk fearfully trying to cross the road, gorging on hamburgers and pizza (you must be so homesick you're suicidal to eat pizza in Vietnam) and ice cream and tipping waiters and spending too much money on cheap souveniers they could get back home. They even had an Irish pub. Fearing that inside would be a typical Irish Pub, I didnt' go in. It could be one of those magician's boxes where you know what to expect on the inside but you never know where you will be when you come OUT. One thing worth mentioning--St. Patties day was never televised or even advertised. I like it here.

Vietnamese are very proud of their squid. They're always strung up under a bar of florescent light, even when hawked from a bicycle. The guys in front apparently have no sense of smell.

Meat: No substitute

This is photo worthy because it is the only kind of tofu, out of an over-wide range of tofus, that I actually like. We get it right off the street. It's firm, not gooey, and is cooked with a light tomato sauce and liberally stuffed with meat. All other tofu us crap.
